motorcycle license florida

You want to buy a motorcycle, but you don’t know if you have what it takes to ride it. Thankfully, the State has a test to make sure you’re fit to ride on the roads. Learn more about what it takes to get your motorcycle license in the Sunshine State.

Florida Motorcycle Licenses

In Florida, you can get two types of motorcycle licenses. The first is a “motorcycle only” license. This license gives you the right to ride motorcycles, and only motorcycles. Depending on your age, you may or may not be eligible to apply. From ages 16 to 18, you’re required to have had a learner’s permit, or a “Class E Learner’s License”, for at least a year to be eligible for the upgrade to a Motorcycle Only license.

Motorcycle Licenses for New Florida DriversSorry kid, you're too young for a motorcycle license

If you’re a new driver, you’ll have to go to the DMV no matter what. In this case, the best thing to do is most likely to get your Class E Driver’s License and get the Motorcycle Endorsement at the same time. As long as that license is valid and in good order, you will be legal to drive either vehicle in the state.

Requirements: pass the MSF Basic Rider Course, bring required documents (these change regularly, so check the DMV list here), and pay the fees (ditto for fee changes).

If you already have an out of state license, you’ll just need to turn it in and get a Florida license. Then, it’s time for registration. Check out our blog on how to register a motorcycle in Florida for more details on this.
